Dutch govt backs open cable networks

Henk Kamp, the Dutch minister of economic affairs, said he could support the standpoint of opposition party D66 that cable operators should be required to open their networks to rival service providers. In a parliamentary debate on the telecom sector, Kamp said it was strange that telecom incumbent KPN must open its network to others, but the main cable operators, Ziggo and UPC, do not face such regulation. Both cable operators have a monopoly on their own networks, and together they cover over 90 percent of households. Kamp said that the EU should adopt a similar standpoint on the two types
