Dutch govt upholds data retention legislation

The Dutch government said data retention legislation will remain in place, despite an EU court ruling earlier this year striking down the associated EU directive. In a brief to parliament, the government said the law requiring telecom providers to retain customer communications data was essential for law enforcement efforts. The court ruling does not affect the Dutch law, which was implemented legally according to local procedures. However, the government will tighten the procedures for accessing the stored data.
