Dutch operators grow 4G base to over 7 million

The Dutch mobile operators have at least 7 million LTE customers, up from 5.6 million last September, according to research by Telecompaper. KPN has grown from around 3 million last June to 3.4 million at the end of 2015, while Vodafone's 4G base grew from 1.4 million in August 2015 to 2.1 million now. T-Mobile said it's added around 300,000 active 4G users since last August, for a total of around 1.5 million. Tele2 declined to give figures, but it recently said that around 61 percent of data traffic is going over its own 4G network.

All four network operators offer 4G as standard, at no extra cost. Their average network coverage was 83 percent in February, up from 80 percent last September, according to the latest research from OpenSignal. Vodafone spokeswoman Alexis van Liebergen said that 4G subscribers are using around three times as much data as other customers. The average data use of 4G customers is also up 33 percent since last August.

Just over half (51%) of Dutch consumers had 4G smartphones in September last year, according to research from the Telecompaper Consumer Panel. That's nearly double a year earlier. Use of the 4G network also tripled in the same period, from 12 percent to 33 percent of consumers. Telecompaper will update the figures with new research to be published in the coming week, showing 54 percent now have 4G phones and 38 percent use 4G services.
