Dutch privacy watchdog says law needed to use telecom data for virus tracking

The Dutch government may use the location data collected on Dutch people by telecom networks in the fight against the coronavirus if appropriate legislation is passed, the Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP) said in response to the idea put forward by an EU commissioner. The three Dutch MNOs KPN, VodafoneZiggo and T-Mobile Netherlands said they would be ready to share customer data under certain strict conditions. While the European Data Protection Supervisor EDPS said such plans do not violate EU data protection law, some Dutch political parties are critical of the idea.
