Dutch public Wi-Fi use stable at around 80% of consumers

Friday 15 March 2019 | 12:34 CET | News

Around four out of five Dutch consumers use Wi-Fi hotspots outside the home, according to research by the Telecompaper Consumer Insights panel in February. Even with increasing availability and speed of 4G networks, Wi-Fi usage is stable year-on-year.

Around one in ten consumers said they have a subscription to Wi-Fi networks through their fixed or mobile provider. VodafoneZiggo offers shared access to its customer routers in this way, while KPN provides access to the global Fon Wi-Fi network.

Only 4 percent said they pay for Wi-Fi access. The majority, 66 percent said they use public networks secured with a password, while 40 percent use free open networks in public, without a password. Still, 18 percent said they don't use public Wi-Fi, a share stable over the past two years.
