Dutch TV viewing continues shift to on-demand in August

Dutch TV viewing figures for August show a shift from linear to on-demand use, as well as more use of catch-up services. The SKO monthly figures show total TV viewing time averaged 170 minutes per day during the month. 

The figure includes 134 minutes for linear TV, up 0.8 percent from a year earlier, and 36 minutes on other forms of viewing. VoD took 21.2 percent of total viewing time, a share increasing over time. 

The 134 minutes for linear TV includes an average 117 minutes on live TV and 17 minutes of delayed viewing. That increased the share of delayed viewing to 12.4 percent from 11.2 percent in the previous month. Over more months, the figure is largely stable. 

The public broadcaster NPO increased its share of prime-time audiences to 35.6 percent from 33.3 percent a year ago, but this was down from 39.8 percent in July. RTL was also up year-on-year at 24.1 percent versus 23.4 percent in August 2018, but down slightly from 24.3 percent in July. Talpa grew across both periods, to 21.5 percent from 17.8 a year earlier and 19.3 in July. This led to a drop in share for the other broadcasters (Disney/Fox, Viacom, Discovery) to 18.8 percent. 

Of the 25 best viewed programmes in the month, 18 were on NPO channels, four on Talpa (mainly European football), two on RTL and one on Ziggo Sport (Formula 1).
