Dutch VoIP market reaches 3.5 million users in 2009
The number of Dutch consumer VoIP subscriptions grew 3.8 percent during the fourth quarter, to 3.56 million at the end of December 2009, according to Telecompaper's Dutch Fixed Telephony Q4 2009 report. The growth was driven by cable VoIP, with 5 percent growth during the quarter, while DSL reported quarterly growth of only 2.1 percent. The total fixed telephony market grew by almost 37,000 connections during the fourth quarter of 2009 to 5.997 million, despite a 4.1 percent drop in PSTN/ISDN connections to 2.019 million on 31 December 2009. The number of Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) users decreased by around 1.7 percent during the quarter to 414,000 on 31 December 2009. KPN is the largest VoIP service provider with a market share of 33.6 percent , followed by cable operators Ziggo and UPC. For this year, Telecompaper expects a quarterly growth of between 2.5 and 3 percent to reach 3.8 million VoIP users in the Netherlands by year-end. The growth will be driven by triple play sales from cable operators, KPN and Tele2.
