EC, ACM exchange barbs over authority on UPC-Ziggo deal

The European Commission has expressed surprise at the Dutch regulator's explicit call for the right to evaluate Liberty Global's proposed takeover of Dutch cable operator Ziggo. According to European Commissioner for Competition Joaquin Almunia, the Dutch regulator ACM was speaking out of turn. Shortly after the announcement of Liberty's proposed bid, the ACM said it felt it was best-placed to evaluate the deal, which would also result in a merger of the number one and two cable operators in the country, Ziggo and Liberty's local operator UPC.
