EC says no plans for new data retention directive

The European Commission will not introduce a new law requiring telecom companies to store customer communications data for security purposes, Reuters reports. The EU home affairs commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos told a news conference in Brussels that the data retention directive struck down last year by the EU Court of Justice will not be re-introduced. Some countries such as the UK have already introduced their own legislation requiring the data collection and storage, and others like the Netherlands are preparing similar laws.
