EC set to propose regulation for messaging apps - report

The European Commission is expected this week to propose subjecting online messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Skype to some of the same rules as those applied to telecommunications companies, according to unnamed sources cited by the Wall Street Journal. The report indicates that EU officials recently told tech and telecom lobbyists that they are preparing draft proposals that could help create a more level playing field for the respective sectors. These could include the requirement for WhatsApp to be subject to oversight from national telecom regulators on topics such as network
