EC vetoes EUR 46 mln in DTT subsidies for La Mancha region

The European Commission has ruled that subsidies worth EUR 46 million granted in the Spanish region of Castilla-La Mancha to finance the expansion of DTT in remote areas were illegal and must be paid back by the beneficiaries of the state aid. The EC concluded that the DTT subsides breached the principle of technological neutrality, favouring terrestrial digital technology to the detriment of other distribution platforms such as satellite, cable or the internet. In addition, the EC said the financing discriminated between different terrestrial operators, as the regional government handed out
