EC wants online platforms to set up code of practice against fake news by July

The European Commission has drafted a Code of Practice on Disinformation to tackle the "fake news and online disinformation" found on online platforms and social networks, and to ensure the protection of European values and security. A EC study on fake new showed most people accessing online news through algorithm-driven platforms such as search engines and news aggregators, as well as social media websites. This means market power and revenue streams have moved from news publishers to platform operators: these have the data to match readers, articles and ads. The code will therefore support
