Ectel unable to regulate Columbus acquisition by CWC

The Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (Ectel) announced that it has been unable to reach an amicable agreement with Cable & Wireless Communication (CWC) over its acquisition of Columbus International, reports the Jamaica Observer. The regulator said it had insufficient legal standing to stop or impose remedies on companies partaking in mergers and acquisitions in the telecommunications sector. When CWC announced its acquisition of Colombus for USD 1.85 billion in November 2014, Ectel said it would investigate whether the transaction could "potentially result in a negative impact
