El Salvador watchdog rejects Claro-Digicel merger again

El Salvador competition body Superintendencia de Competencia (SC) has once again rejected the proposed merger of America Movil's local subsidiary Claro with Digicel, Revista Summa reports. America Movil agreed to acquire Digicel's businesses in El Salvador and Honduras in April 2011. The merger was first rejected in May 2011. Under SC's current decision, a merger between Claro and Digicel presents "high probability of an adverse effect on the dynamics of competition and consumer welfare in the fixed and mobile telephony markets", mainly due to the reduction in the number of operators on the local market.
