El Salvador watchdog sets conditions on Digicel-Claro deal
El Salvador competition watchdog Superintendencia de Competencia (SC) has imposed a series of conditions on the proposed acquisition of Digicel by America Movil's local unit Claro, El Mundo reports. SC believes that the deal would restrict competition in the mobile market. Thus, before the acquisition can be approved, Claro must return to telecoms regulator Superintendencia General de Electricidad y Telecomunicaciones (SIGET) 20 MHz of spectrum. The released spectrum would then be offered to new players on the market. At the end of August, the Jamaican government approved the Digicel-Claro merger, but the deal remains subject to antitrust approval in El Salvador and Honduras.
