Enel has no plans to become telecom operator - CEO

Italian utility giant Enel will help to build up a fibre-optic broadband network throughout Italy but has no plans to re-enter the telecommunications industry as an operator, confirmed Enel CEO Francesco Starace in an interview with La Repubblica. "We'll build the broadband but we have no intention of going back to being an operator," said Starace. The utility is due to install 33 million smart meters over the next four years and is letting operators use the pipes for broadband purposes via its Enel Open Fiber (EOF) wholesale-only venture.
