EP committee set to vote on private data protection law

Monday 21 October 2013 | 08:55 CET | News
MEPs sitting on the Civil Liberties Committee of the European Parliament are expected to vote on private data protection legislation on 21 October, after many months of debate, reports Les Echos. The key measures include one to control data transfer outside of the EU, the so-called right to be forgotten ("droit a l'oubli") and increasing the maximum penalty for infractions to 5 percent of turnover, rather than the 2 percent proposed by the European Commission. Les Echos writes that the bill is unlikely to pass into law before the European elections of Spring 2014.
