Ericsson contracts Wistron to build 5G mobile hotspot for network testing

Ericsson announced it's working with the Taiwanese manufacturer Wistron to develop a 5G mobile hotspot device. The company contracted Wistron to build a device it can use in testing new 5G networks with customers. Trials are expected to start this month.

The device is based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem and will be used for mid-band (sub-6 GHz) 5G New Radio non-standalone services, also supporting high-end LTE access (Cat 16). Maximum speeds are expected to reach 2.2 Gbps. The device will allow Ericsson and its customers to test both network performance and mobility in real-life situations.

The 5G mobile hotspot router has one USB connection and one normal cable power connection and can be used in two phases. In phase one, it can be used for interoperability tests with Ericsson’s first-mover customers using pre-commercial hardware and is available from Q4. In phase two, the device has a commercial form factor and will be used for Ericsson’s own general testing alongside customer engagements.
