Ericsson unveils new 5G hardware and software ahead of MWC Americas

Ericsson has announced the forthcoming launch of a range of new additions to its 5G hardware and software portfolio, including new radio access network (RAN) compute architecture, spectrum sharing between 4G and 5G bands and street macro transport technology. The new RAN Compute portfolio is designed to enable easier distribution of RAN functions including beamforming and radio control, said the company. It includes all the current basebands in addition to four new RAN Compute products that provide up to three times the capacity of current basebands.

Ericsson also unveiled its new Spectrum Sharing software to dynamically support 4G and 5G simultaneously through a remote software installation within the same spectrum band on any Ericsson Radio System shipped since 2015. The capability will allow communication service providers to deliver nationwide 5G coverage with a much more flexible spectrum migration strategy, removing the need to dedicate existing 4G spectrum assets to 5G statically, said the company.

Finally, Ericsson’s new Street Macro radios are intended to make it easier to deploy 5G across mmWave spectrum bands to boost capacity within urban areas. All of the new products will be featured at the upcoming Mobile World Congress Americas in Los Angeles from 12 to 14 September and will become commercially available in the second half of 2019.
