Ericsson announced that it teamed up with Telefonica and M2M developer Telit to successfully test the first end-to-end data communications call on Narrow Band-IoT (NB-IoT) over the air using Band 20 (800MHz) on Telefonica's network in Spain. A complete multi-vendor environment using 3GPP standards was set up with Ericsson's radio and packet core technologies together with Telit modules integrating NB-IoT chipsets. The partners added that the test was conducted at the 5Tonic Laboratory for 5G excellence created by Telefonica and IMDEA Networks Institute and follows the tests already performed for Cat-M1 (LTE-M) technologies.

Ericsson said the tests would eventually lead to the creation of new innovative and cost effective IoT solutions for Spanish industries by enabling operators, device manufacturers and solution providers to develop end-to-end real world IoT platforms based on open standards. It added that it will be running demonstrations of Massive IoT technologies powering a wide range of use cases at MWC 2017.
