Ethiopian govt allows telecom firms to provide mobile money services

Thursday 2 April 2020 | 09:42 CET | News
Ethiopia will allow non-financial institutions to offer mobile money services, opening up the business to telecommunication companies including the state-owned monopoly Ethio Telecom, Bloomberg reported. A central bank directive comes amid plans to liberalise the telecoms industry by offering two new licences and selling a stake in Ethio Telecom. MTN Group, Vodacom Group and Orange have expressed an interest in entering the nation with a population of more than 105 million.
