ETNO, GSMA reiterate opposition to ePrivacy directive

Industry groups ETNO and the GSMA have reiterated their opposition to extending the EU's e-Privacy directive, saying they are concerned about the direction the European Commission is taking in its review of the directive. In a letter to the Commission, the groups said the new General Data Protection Regulation, scheduled to take effect in the EU by 2018, provides sufficient safeguards for protecting privacy, and the communications sector should not be singled out for additional rules, as is currently the case with the ePrivacy directive. They warned that attempts to extend data protection
