ETNO: telcos still facing double data protection rules

The association of European telecom operators ETNO has welcomed the EU compromise on new data protection legislation, but said it does not go far enough in creating a level playing field for telecom operators. ETNO said in a statement that the agreement "is an important step towards horizontal rules applicable across the digital value chain". However, the electronic communications sector remains subject to double regulation, as not only must it comply with the data protection legislation, it also must meet the requirements of the ePrivacy Directive.
