EU Council delays data protection directive to 2015

EU leaders have backed away at their latest summit from a quick implementation of the new data protection directive. A parliamentary committee approved earlier in the week the draft legislation for negotiations with the EU Council, with the hope of passing the new directive by next spring. However, the Council said in the final statement from the first day of its summit in Brussels that completion of the legislation was only essential by 2015. According to a report from Euractiv, the UK was opposed to the directive due to concerns it may harm business, while Germany also had reservations
