EU court advocate sees problems with UK, Belgium, France data retention laws

The EU Court of Justice's advocate general has said the court's earlier ruling against a general data retention obligation for telecom operators should be upheld. The opinion was issued for three cases referred to the court, by France's Council of State, Belgium's Constitutional Court and Privacy International in the UK. Legislation in all three countries on data retention was found by the advocate to be too broad and indiscriminate, violating fundamental rights of EU citizens.
