EU court confirms free-to-air access to football images

The EU Court of Justice confirmed the validity of the EU law on 22 January that guarantees the right of free-to-air broadcasters to air short news reports of events of great interest to the public, such as football matches. It added that such rights have asset value and do not constitute mere commercial interests or opportunities. The decision came at the conclusion of a case between pay-TV operator Sky Osterreich and Austrian public broadcaster ORF, which the former lost.
