EU directive facilitating broadband roll-out takes effect

The EU Directive on measures to reduce the cost of broadband roll-out has taken effect, following its publication in the Official Journal. First proposed two years ago, the directive targets easier network roll-out in four areas: enhanced sharing with energy, transport and other utilities of existing infrastructure (such as ducts, poles or masts); efficient coordination of civil works, avoiding digging duplication; faster and simpler granting of permits; and equipping new buildings and major renovations with high-speed infrastructure and open network access. EU states have until 1 January
