EU fast broadband coverage may cost "only" EUR 80 bln

Tuesday 21 May 2013 | 10:55 CET | News
The cost of bringing at least 30 Mbps downstream broadband services to the whole of the EU could be around EUR 80 billion, much less than previous estimates of up to EUR 270 billion, according to Point Topic. This level of coverage is one of the main planks of the European Commission's "Digital Agenda". Point Topic's lower estimate takes into account the coverage level of superfast broadband networks at around 50 percent of homes at the end of 2011. It also recognizes that cable TV networks using the Docsis 3 standard and less expensive VDSL technology can complement FTTH.
