EU goals can only be met with state intervention-Giacomelli

Italy will only be able to meet European digital agenda targets to bring ultrafast broadband to half its population by 2020 with the help of the state, according to Italian undersecretary for economic development in charge of telecommunications Antonello Giacomelli. In a letter to Italian daily Corriere della Sera, Giacomelli responded to accusations of interventionism on the part of the government, which recently approved its Strategy for Italian Broadband and Digital Growth 2014-20.
