EU ministers approve subsidies for local Wi-Fi networks

Monday 5 December 2016 | 08:37 CET | News
EU telecom ministers have approved a proposal from the European Commission to subsidise Wi-Fi services in small towns. The WiFi4EU initiative will use money from the Connecting Europe Facility to offer subsidies to local governments of up to 100 percent of the costs of installing local wireless access points. The beneficiary will maintain the service, and the free network will be easily recognisable to citizens under the WiFi4EU brand. The Council said the funding will be allocated in a "geographically balanced manner across the EU and, in principle, on a first-come, first-served basis".
