EU mulls making Galileo chip mandatory in cars, phones

The EU is considering how it could make it mandatory for mobile devices with satellite location technology to include the Galileo service, writes Silicon.fr. The Galileo satellite constellation, whose commercial launch has been pushed back by launch delays, is the fourth after the US's GPS, Russia's Glonass and China's Beidou. On 7 May, the EU will discuss the fourth of five different scenarios for the move, regarding imposing Galileo chipsets for the purpose of locating the source of emergency calls. It would apply to automobiles under the eCall system and smartphones, plus possibly tablets.
