EU to decide on tougher internet rules by year end, dismisses Facebook paper

The European Union is set to decide whether or not to impose tougher rules to mitigate the market power of US tech giants by the end of this year, said the bloc's industry chief following a meeting with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. "It's not for us to adapt to this company, it's for this company to adapt to us," said EU industry commissioner Thierry Breton, according to Reuters. Breton, a former Orange and Atos CEO, was referring to a discussion paper issued by Facebook that rejected what it described as intrusive regulations and suggested looser rules whereby companies would report content
