European consortium demonstrates 1 Gbps satellite broadband

German research institute Fraunhofer IIS teamed up with Germany-based manufacturer of advanced satellite communications Work Microwave and UK-based satellite data communications services provider Avanti Communications to implement a DVB-S2X wideband transmission system over satellite, including modulator and demodulator. The consortium has completed over the air trials using Avanti Hylas capacity for demonstrations using wideband carriers exploiting full transponder bandwidth and outperforming the target throughput of more than 1 Gbps using a single communication carrier.
