European Parliament calls again for universal mobile phone charger standard

Tuesday 14 January 2020 | 10:52 CET | News

The European Parliament has called again for the EU to take action on mobile phone chargers, imposing a single standard for the devices in order to reduce waste and simplify matters for consumers with multiple devices. Following a debate in Parliament, the European Commissioner in charge of better regulation, Maros Sefcovic said the Commission "strongly supports" harmonisation of chargers and would look at legislative options.

The Commission has relied on voluntary efforts from the industry to date, after previous calls from the Parliament going back ten years. Sefcovic noted that this has helped to reduce the types of charger on the market to three - microUSB, USB Type-C and Apple's Lightning - compared to over 30 proprietary systems before.
