European smart city spend set to reach USD 19 bln this year

European spending on technologies related to smart city projects is expected to hit USD 19 billion in 2018, according to a report from IDC. With European smart city initiatives going beyond early stage and isolated pilots, the report estimates that spending will accelerate yet further over the next 4 years, growing to USD 31 billion in 2021. On a geographic basis, Western European countries represent more than 90 percent of European spending, expected to reach USD 16.9 billion in 2018, while Central and Eastern European countries will grow at a slightly faster pace when compared with Western
