Facebook steers users to disclose maximum data - study

The US Consumers Union has sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission urging the agency to investigate its findings that privacy controls on Facebook "steer" users toward sharing the maximum amount of data. "Our research found that Facebook uses [various] interfaces to steer users to the least private options when creating a Facebook account, said the consumer body in its letter. Tactics used by Facebook and other platforms to nudge consumers toward giving consent to disclosing as much data as possible include privacy-intrusive default settings, misleading wording, giving users an illusion
