FCC abandons proposal to allow mobile calls on planes

The FCC has officially abandoned a process first started in 2013 to look at allowing mobile cellular communications aboard aircraft. The FCC said it faced strong opposition from pilots and flight staff who consider allowing mobile calls in-flight a serious security risk. While some industry stakeholders support allowing calls on-board, there is significant divergence on the technical measures required, and more rigorous study of the risks is needed, according to the regulator.
