FCC calls for Congress to drop plan for T band auction

Monday 2 December 2019 | 18:03 CET | News

The FCC has proposed dropping a plan to vacate low band spectrum used by public safety authorities, saying it's too expensive to refarm the frequencies. A 2012 law requires the regulator to auction the spectrum by the end of 2021.

FCC chairman Ajit Pai called on Congress to repeal the legislation "without delay". Both the FCC's analysis and a study by the government's General Accounting Office found that the costs of moving existing users out of the so-called T band frequencies would far outweigh the income that could be generated from auctioning the radio waves.

Pai said the FCC could better focus its attention on other bands ready for auction, such as the 3.5 and 3.7 GHz ranges, which could be used for 5G services.

The legislation concerns low-band spectrum not used for broadcasting services in 11 large cities. Around 925 public authorities use the frequencies as well as 700 industrial or business entities. The T-Band serves push-to-talk, mission-critical voice communications for local government, law enforcement, and first responder entities (including fire management, emergency medical, road maintenance, transit, public works, and others).
