FCC chairman lends support to activating FM on smartphones

FCC chairman Ajit Pai has lent his support to activating FM radios on smartphones, but said the FCC will not make it a legal requirement. In a speech at the North American Broadcasters Associations's 'Future of Radio and Audio' symposium, Pai noted that "vast majority" of smartphones sold in the US contain FM chips, but "he problem is that most of them aren't activated". As of last autumn, only about 44 percent of the top-selling smartphones in the US had activated FM chips, according to the FCC chairman.
