FCC set to approve net neutrality rules
The US FCC is set to approve net neutrality rules after a majority of its board members indicated they will support the proposal from chairman Julius Genachowski. While Republican commissioners have opposed the plans, the Democratic FCC Commissioners Mignon Clyburn and Michael Copps have indicated they will vote in support, despite the measures being weaker than what they would like. Genachowski originally proposed in May that part of the Title II regulations covering telecom operators be extended to internet services providers. This proposal has since been watered down. The proposed rules would require mobile and fixed broadband providers to provide more information on how they manage traffic and congestion on their networks, and not resort to any 'unreasonable' traffic management techniques. Fixed ISPs would not be able to block access to any legal applications, online services and devices and be prohibited from discriminating against any bandwidth-heavy services.
