Fibre rollout would cost four times less with Enel - CEO

Italian utility giant Enel has no intention of participating in the forthcoming tenders to roll out a national fibre-optic network but has reiterated its willingness to take an active role in the government's broadband plans. "Using the opportunity provided by Enel, the costs of rolling out cables could be reduced by a factor of four," said the company's CEO Francesco Starace in an interview with Italian daily Il Sole 24 Ore. Enel has plans to install new smart metres in around 33 million Italian households over the next four years and is prepared to use the existing ducts to roll out
