First new gTLD agreements signed in Durban

ICANN's 47th public meeting in Durban, South Africa, saw the first group of internet registries and registrars sign agreements with the organisation for the new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) ahead of their activation in the internet's root. Three companies signed the Registry Agreement, applying for TLD names using characters in Arabic, Chinese and Cyrillic. Five others signed the Registrar Accreditation Agreement, including registrars from Australia, France, Senegal and the US. Registries operate TLDs and registrars are the entities through which domain names are registered. ICANN's
