First Sunrise customers using 5G for high-speed broadband

Swiss telecoms operator Sunrise announced that 5G services are now live with the first selected customers using 5G broadband.

As part of its '5G for People' strategy, Sunrise initially covers more than 150 cities and villages across Switzerland with 5G. To benefit from 5G internet, customers need 5G coverage and the Sunrise Internet Box 5G. Sunrise has provided the device to selected 5G pioneers free of charge as an introductory offer. 

Sunrise also plans to launch 5G smartphone and IPTV services in 2019. The operator is using Huawei network equipment and user terminals for the 5G services.

Swiss operator Sunrise has opened up its 5G network to home and office customers. Customers can opt for 5G for their fixed broadband service and also use the mobile network as a replacement for fixed telephony and TV services. Sunrise will offer 5G automatically in areas where the fixed network is slow.

Swiss operator Sunrise said it has provided 262 cities and towns with 5G as of the end of August, making a total of 80 percent of the population able to receive coverage.

Swiss operator Sunrise will launch two 5G smartphones from 02 May, namely the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G and Huawei Mate 20 X (5G). Sunrise has launched the first 5G network in Switzerland. The first selected customers have been using the Sunrise Internet Box 5G for 5G high-bandwidth Internet at their home or place of work since the beginning of April. Now Sunrise is the first operator to launch two 5G smartphones, in a world premiere.

Swiss regulator Bakom has launched an online map of 5G antennas, following the launch of 5G networks announced by Swisscom and Sunrise, reports CEToday.ch. The online map already showed 2G, 3G and LTE antennas, as well as radio and TV transmitters.

Swisscom switches on commercial 5G network

Ericsson and Swisscom have switched on what they say is the first large-scale commercial 5G network in Europe to support commercially available smartphones. The network went live in the first minute of 17 April, following Swisscom's securing of a commercial 5G licence. As all the other component parts were already in place, so the license meant the partners simply had to switch the network on.

Sunrise adds 42,300 post-paid mobile customers in Q4

Swiss telecoms company Sunrise has reported total revenue of CHF 486 million for Q4 2018, down 4.6 percent from CHF 509 million in the year-earlier quarter. Service revenue was up slightly to CHF 380 million, compared to CHF 373 million previously. The company met its full-year guidance and said it will increase the dividend by 5 percent.

Sunrise to launch 5G in March as home broadband alternative

After acquiring 5G frequencies in the recent spectrum auction, the Swiss operator Sunrise is the first provider to launch 5G. With "5G for People", Sunrise is focusing on an initial phase of "fibre speed through the air" in areas that are not covered by fibre-optic networks. By the end of March, 150 cities and villages will have 5G coverage.

Sunrise wins 3.5 GHz frequencies in 5G auction at favourable price

At the 5G frequency auction, Swiss operator Sunrise has acquired the strategically most important frequencies in the 3.5 GHz band, which fit its "5G for People" strategy. With its existing and new frequencies, Sunrise will be able to secure its existing 96 percent LTE area coverage and deliver a 5G network in the future.

Switzerland awards 5G frequencies after eight days of bidding

The Swiss Federal Communications Commission (ComCom) has successfully concluded the 5G auction. All three existing operators - Salt, Sunrise and Swisscom - were able to acquire a wide range of new frequencies in the auction, in the 700 MHz, 1400 MHz and 3500 MHz bands. The auction revenues for the federal government amount to around CHF 380 million.
