Former France Televisions executive works on SVoD project to export French content abroad

Julien Verley has resigned from his position at France Televisions to develop an SVoD service focussed on the aggregation of French content in selected international markets. He aims to launch the new initiative sometime next year, after holding talks with players including broadcaster TF1, its former employer France Televisions and Canal Plus, where he worked as a senior executive for many years.

Named France+, the new service will be targeted at markets where French content is infrequently exported, Verley told Les Echos, naming the US, Latin America, Asia and English-speaking African countries as examples.

He is currently negotiating funding with private and public backers, based on an investment estimated at around EUR 40 million. Audio dubbing will be one of the main costs for the new company, with up to 2,500-3,000 hours of programmes per year dubbed and sub-titled in English, Spanish and Chinese.

Verley estimates that its business model could result in a profitable business with a customer base of 3 million subscribers internationally, paying a USD 3 monthly fee for the service.
