Former Google CEO Schmidt to leave Alphabet board

The former Google CEO and chairman Eric Schmidt is stepping down from the company's board after the upcoming AGM.  He will continue as a technical advisor to Alphabet, Google's parent company, it announced. 

In addition, Diane Greene, who has served as a member of the board since January 2012, is not seeking re-election at the AGM in June. She also served as CEO of Google Cloud from December 2015 to January 2019.

Alphabet announced that Robin L. Washington, the CEO of biopharma company Gilead Sciences, will join the board from 25 April. She will serve on Alphabet’s Leadership Development and Compensation Committee. Washington worked previously as CFO of Hyperion Solutions and spent time at Peoplesoft, Honeywell and Salesforce.

Alphabet reported a solid set of second-quarter results, with revenue growth strengthening slightly to 19 percent. At constant currency rates, sales were up 22 percent to USD 38.944 billion. Alphabet's Google appointed Stanley Chen as its managing director of Greater China sales and operations, according to Reuters citing a company statement. Most recently, Chen was general manager of Google Taiwan, a role he held for the last eight years. He will be based in Shanghai.

Alphabet lifts revenues in Q1 but profit hit by EU fine, higher R&D

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, said revenues for first quarter lifted to USD 36.339 billion from 31.146 billion the year before, an increase of 17 percent that was a bit slower than previous quarters. Alphabet has announced it will be losing Eric Schmidt, who from January will transition from his position as executive chairman of the board of directors, to becoming a technical advisor. Schmidt will continue to serve on the board of Alphabet, which he joined 17 years ago. The company expects to appoint a non-executive chairman.
