Former Google CEO warns US data infrastructure at risk after expensive 5G auction

The former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has warned the US's mobile infrastructure is at threat following the high prices paid in the recent C-band spectrum auction. In an opinion piece in the Financial Times, Schmidt said the operators will be reluctant to invest in quick expansion of their 5G networks after paying USD 81 billion in total for the mid-band spectrum. This risks putting the US further behind China in the development of internet infrastructure, he warned.
