FP Telecommunications (FPT) and Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) have announced a deal to work together on the deployment of the Aurora submarine cable system to meet increasing bandwidth demands for broadband applications in North, Central and South America countries. The USD 310 million system will deliver up to 15 Tbps of capacity and strengthen the existing network infrastructure in a region that has a limited ability to manage growing demands associated with a larger user base, bandwidth growth, 4G/5G networks, low latency applications, Video on Demand, Internet of Things and Big Data, said the partners in a statement.
The Aurora network will connect Sarasota, in West Florida, to Manta, in Ecuador, via Panama, and is also designed to enable extension to Chile and to connect to the US without intermediate regeneration. Technology to be used will include ASN’s 1620 Softnode, which incorporates multiple transmission formats, Roadm branching units and Wavelength Selective Switch technology (WSS). As part of the contract, ASN will also be in charge of project management, system design, marine operations and system commissioning.
