
The number of Sim cards in service in France reached 78.4 million at the end of June, 885,000 more than three months earlier and 3.6 million more than a year earlier, according to telecom regulator Arcep. The Sim card penetration rate rose by 5 percentage points to 119.2 percent in one year. The market saw the addition of 675,000 postpaid Sim cards and 340,000 new M2M cards in the second quarter, taking the totals to 55.7 million and 7.6 million, respectively. The prepaid card base decreased by 130,000 in the quarter, compared to 360,000 fewer prepaid cards in the first quarter.
Of the 75.5 million Sim cards in service in metropolitan France, 66.9 million are with MNOs and 8.8 million with MVNOs. MVNOs had a 53.3 percent share of prepaid cards in the quarter. MVNOs’ share of postpaid cards rose by 1 percentage point to 12.8 percent in the quarter. The share of mobile phone contacts with no contract tie-in period or for which the contract period has expired grew by 8 percentage points to 47.4 percent in the second quarter.
