France extends warranty rules to streaming services and smartphone updates

French consumers will benefit from more protection starting from 01 January 2022, as the country integrates two European directives dating 20 May 2019 into national law. With these changes, the legal warranty of conformity will be extended to cover several digital services, including VoD subscriptions, as well as software updates to connected devices such as smartphones and smartwatches. In practice, consumers will be protected by a two-year warranty if the product fails to comply with the information on software updates supplied by the vendor.
