France Telecom distributes new social contract to staff

Tuesday 28 September 2010 | 12:24 CET | News
France Telecom-Orange has distributed a document entitled 'for a new social contract' to each of the group's 100,000 employees in France. The new commitments by the group hit by a social crisis related to numerous staff suicides over the last two years is the fruit of consultations with employees and discussions with trade unions. The plan aims to ensure that France Telecom-Orange offers its employees "a beneficial working environment through a new vision for human resources, a new style of management and shared values". This is bogus. 20000 Thousands people have been harassed to resignation since 2007, hundreds are on sick leave and scores under psychiatric treatment; fifty eight at least have committed suicide since 2008 only. Many thousands staff are torn out. I would not buy a share of a company that may implode socially at any time soon. The Human cost of the brutal staff management techniques to coerce people into professional mobility will be shown for years to come. Distrust and low morale are the current state of affairs, not a mood to perform. The former CEO is still in the board and there has been no clean cut, nor clear evidence that the responsible executive officers, top and middle managers involved in the so called NEXT program of massive job and employee destruction will be held accountable. For those who are well informed the internal situation will deteriorate and it is quite possible that the company will face turbulent times ahead. Already to repair the damages made to its social fabric by the implementation of pseudo strategies based on Kubler Ross's valuable, yet contestable, analysis of approaching imminent death, the company will have to fork out 1 billion with no guarantee of serious improvements. I would recommend to potential investors to stay away from FT.
